Bungie terminates long-time composer Marty O’Donnell

O’Donnell and McCartney in 2012

Marty O’Donnell, Bungie’s longtime veteran composer has been terminated by Bungie’s Board of Directors on April 11th, 2014. O’Donnell joined Bungie in 1999 after composing the music for both Myth and Oni. He then worked on the Halo series from the iconic theme of the original through to Halo: Reach.

O’Donnell was working with Mike Salvatori & Sir Paul McCartney for Bungie’s highly anticipated game Destiny, which is set to release September 9th, 2014.

According to the tweet by O’Donnell, he has be terminated without cause. Bungie has yet to comment, but this is breaking news. I’ll update this article accordingly as information is released.

UPDATE: Bungie has made a comment. Written by David Dague, Bungie Community Manager (better known to the community as DeeJ)

“There are those who said this day would never come…

For more than a decade, Marty O’Donnell filled our worlds with unforgettable sounds and soundtracks, and left an indelible mark on our fans. Today, as friends, we say goodbye. We know that wherever his journey takes him, he will always have a bright and hopeful future.

We wish him luck in all his future endeavors.”

My thoughts go out to Marty O’Donnell. I’ll leave you with my favourite piece by O’Donnell and Salvatori.

Ridley Scott Live Action Halo Series Without Master Chief!

For nearly a decade we’ve heard rumours about a Halo movie. Recently, in January this year rumours were floating around that there were plans for a live-action Halo movie produced by Ridley Scott (known for Blade Runner, Alien, & Prometheus). It wasn’t long before Microsoft put an end to the speculation stating there were “no plans for a Halo motion picture at this time”

According to the latest news/rumours from numerous sources it seems like Microsoft was technically correct, and we fell victim to their word play. While there is no Halo motion picture or movie, there seems to be many confirmations that there’s a Halo live-action series instead. Many sites are citing this story as unconfirmed but IGN has stated that Microsoft has indeed confirmed this information. I’m sure we’ll get more information and clarification during E3 in June. Halo 2 Anniversary must “nail” the multiplayer experience

IGN recently did an interview with Microsoft Game Studios boss Phil Spencer during GDC last week in San Francisco, where he was asked what would be the most important feature to him in a hypothetical Halo 2 Anniversary release for the Xbox One.

He replied with

“In this fictitious world where that game existed… it’s an easy answer: it has to be just the multiplayer experience that we all found in that first Halo 2 game. If you think about what happened in the franchise and what were the hallmark moments – when did duel wielding come in, when did another playable character that [weren’t] Master Chief come in?

All the things that you and I know about the evolution of the franchise, if you’re going to say one thing about Halo 2, you’re going to talk about real multiplayer. I think you just have to nail that in just such a fundamentally core way. Frankly [we’d have to do it] probably better than we did with Halo 1 Anniversary. I thought the multiplayer in Halo 1 Anniversary was good, but Halo 1 never had multiplayer in the truest sense, so it always was going to be something different.”

Phil Spencer closed with

“If there were something called Halo 2 Anniversary… I think the multiplayer would have to be fantastic.”

This is definitely great to hear, provided that Halo 2 Anniversary is actually real. It sounds like they want to truly recreate the Halo 2 Multiplayer experience, something we didn’t see truly with Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary. Halo CEA’s campaign was great with the added ability to revert to the original graphics with a touch of a button on the fly – but many were disappointed that Halo Anniversary’s Multiplayer was just re-skinned overtop of Halo Reach, it just didn’t feel right for many and true to the original experience.

What are your thoughts? Did you enjoy Halo Anniversary? What would you like to see if Halo 2 Anniversary was real?

Halo on Xbox One News Coming at E3 2014

Halo Xbox OneA recent tweet from Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has revealed that 343 will unveil Halo news at this years E3 and apparently not during Microsoft’s Spring showcase.

Halo news will be coming at E3. 343i has a great plan in place, will be cool to share with everyone.

Jessica Shea, Senior Community Manager for 343 industries replied to the twitter thread with “Good things are coming,… Oh yes, they’re coming… !!

In 2012 we got some of our first looks of Halo 4 at the spring showcase prior to E3 2012 -and many people have expected the same events to occur for the upcoming Halo title for Xbox One but it appears this may not be the case.

Many people are speculating that we might see a Halo 2 Anniversary announcement at E3 since Halo 2 was released 10 years ago and 343/Microsoft personnel has seemingly been hinting at all things related to Halo 2. Others still think we’ll be getting an announcement for the continuation of Master Chief in Halo 5. Perhaps we’ll have both announcements, because in the end we don’t know what “Halo on Xbox One” really is.

Halo 2 Anniversary Master Chief Prototype Toy?!

Earlier today HaloWaypoint began tweeting out photos of some toys at this year’s Toy Fair in New York. Among the photos, 2 of them were of prototypes from the popular McFarlane Toys. The first being a prototype Master Chief figure modeled after the Halo on Xbox One trailer that we’re all very familiar with.

Complete with a cloak and a promethean boltshot. In regards to this photo, there isn’t much to say. The real story lies within the second photo; A photo of a Halo 2 Master Chief prototype. So here we are again, it feels like 343 is teasing us.

I would just like to point out that this isn’t some old left over toy from 2004. McFarlane toys didn’t start making Halo toys till after Halo 3’s launch. Prior to this, Joyride was making Halo toys (most notably the one used for the famous Arby ‘n’ the Chief Machinima series). This figurine begs the question. Why make one for a game that’s over 10 years old?

Halo 2 Anniversary Confirmed 2014 by Steve Downes

GameZone released a snippet from an interviewed Steve Downes, the long-time voice of Master Chief, and he told them that we shouldn’t expect to see Halo 5 in 2014, but that the series will still see at least one release this year.

“I think you may be ahead of yourself on Halo 5,” Downes said. “I wouldn’t expect anything until 2015. What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2.”

No official statement has been made by 343 Industries or Microsoft.

Are you excited for a potential Halo 2 Anniversary?

RUMOR: HALO 2 ANNIVERSARY FOR XBOX ONE 2014 AND HALO 5 DELAYED

Now normally I wouldn’t make a post about this, but there are some STRONG rumors that surfaced on NeoGAF by a apparently “verified” user who works within the industry.

The user dropped a bunch of information, which as of now has yet to be confirmed or denied so keep that in mind. The user revealed that Halo 2 Anniversary would be coming out on November 11th, 2014 for Xbox One, along with the delay of Halo 5 for one year (to 2015). The user went on to say that there will be a Halo 5 beta included with Halo 2 Anniversary and that H2A will actually have two versions, with one of them including ports of Halo 3 and Halo 4 for Xbox One. This all seems to good to be true, I am slightly skeptical, but other credible NeoGAF users have flip-flopped over the user’s verification but have also stated that Microsoft is pursuing this guy for releasing trade secrets. Who knows at this point.
